Description of contents:
Pierwotny, romański kościół Mariacki (Bazylika Wniebowzięcia NMP) z 1222 r. został zniszczony w czasie najazdów tatarskich. Następnie w latach 1287-1320 wzniesiono świątynię wczesnogotycką, halową, bez prezbiterium. W latach 1355-1365 dobudowano do niej okazałe prezbiterium, w latach 1435-1436 zaś - gotyckie kaplice boczne, należące do rodów patrycjuszowskich. Ołtarz główny to najwybitniejsze dzieło Wita Stwosza (1477-1489). W poł. XVIII w. przebudowano wnętrza w stylu barokowym.

Gruntowne odnowienie kościoła miało miejsce w latach 1881-1891 pod kierunkiem architekta Tadeusza Stryjeńskiego. Polichromie wykonał Jan Matejko wraz z uczniami (Wyspiańskim, Mehofferem, Tetmajerem). W fasadzie znajdują się 2 wieże: wyższa (81 m), zw. hejnalicą, z której co godzinę rozlega się hejnał.
